If you have been following us for the last few months you have noticed our trend to being more environmentally friendly and going green. The Inn on Lake Superior has installed the Green Team!
Beginning many years ago, the Inn was one of the first to use Duluth Steam's waste hot water which would otherwise be vented out. It is run through a closed loop system which is used to heat the Inn on Lake Superior's domestic hot water, pool, spa, rooftop pool, and front entrance. No fossil fuelds are used to heat this water.
The Inn began other green initiatives last summer by going chemical free with their lawn. Working with the Environmental Association for Great Lakes Education Safe Lawn and Garden Campaign, the Inn used worm juice, a by-product of composting with red wriggler worms. We follow up our lawn care by also directing rain water through the gutters to water our gardens wherever possible.
We buy recycled paper products and in bulk where we can. We also buy locally as much as possible to avoid additional emissions into the air. All of our lights have been changed to the energy efficient CFL bulbs.
We announced in February 2008 that we will no longer be using styrofoam products during breakfast. We use real plates, bowls and silverware.
Recycling bins can be found in all public areas, back offices and in each guest room. We also provide a bin for food waste recycling in our breakfast area.
We conserve water usage with sink aerators in all faucets. We have implemented a standardized 3-day linen re-use program reducing water and detergent consumption. In addition, we also ued an eco-friendly laundry detergent so there are no harsh chemicals.
Recently, the University of Minnesota did a feature video on the Inn's green trend. We invite you personally to come visit us and see how an eco-friendly hotel can be a wonderful experience.
